Lats and Atts

Here it Comes!

Beer, pizza and live music. Last year was nothin’ but fun. Maybe a few powerboaters can be rounded up and gibbeted for added entertainment. We can only hope – see you there!

Lats & Atts Jumped The Shark?

by RumHead on July 14, 2008

I’m sort of bummed out. My favorite monthly mailbox arrival used to be Latitudes and Attitudes magazine. I would start flipping through it before I even made it back into house, and usually have the entire mag read within a few days. Now when it arrives, I sort of breeze through it and then consign it to the downstairs head where it stays for a couple weeks before it goes to recycling. I wasn’t sure why I suddenly lost interest in my favorite cruising lifestyle magazine - and then It hit me. It’s Bob’s new $2 Million boat.

Bob Bitchin’ is the founder of Lat’s and Atts, a sailor among sailors, a great writer and one of the nicest guys I’ve met – there’s no question about Bob as a person. A good portion (and my favorite part) of his magazine was based on his adventures sailing an older “Captain Ron” Formosa that he fixed up over the years. His boat was a fairly attainable dream and so were his adventures. He gave us “little guys” the glimmer of hope we needed (and encouraged us) to go through life knowing we could manage similar adventures on almost any budget or lifestyle. About a year ago Bob sold the Formosa and is now building a brand new boat to his specs. It’s beautiful, it has Rolls Royce batteries, twin diesel motors and about every gadget that is advertised in his magazine. It’s also way outside anything I could possibly relate to as a reader. I really followed Lost Soul’s adventures and felt like I was a part of them. This new mega-yact yanked the rug out from under me. Maybe there’s a lot more millionaire readers out there than there are regular folk. I’ve only been a reader for about three years, maybe the adventures of the old Lost Soul had grown mundane and it was time for more. Maybe Bob just deserved the ultimate boat for paying his dues for years. I sure don’t begrudge anybody that, I’ll drink a shot to him, that’s for sure. But I’m sorry – you’ve lost me. I can’t relate if there’s a story how your $15,000 BoFunkle SatCom NatNav malfunctioned and the rep flew in to repair it. I can’t relate to Rolls Royce batteries or multimillion dollar boats. I can’t relate to the lifestyles of the rich and famous.

Lats and Atts still has numerous other stories from cruisers which are all a great read and inspirational. I’m just bummed that we’ve lost Bob as “one of us” because I really liked being part of his crowd. I can’t keep up with his new gang, but I’ll probably get over it and see where this new mega-yacht carries him.
