Messing around with the video of my Grandfather talking about guns and pirates inspired a little websurfing today. A while ago I read, heard, or hit my head on some information about a 38 caliber insert that can be put inside a regular 12 gauge flare gun. Summoning all-mighty Google, I went to work and found it right off.
Ya broke me gun!
The ominous little flare gun booster is called the ”Pirates Plague“. It’s a one shot insert made for the common 12 gauge or 25mm flare launchers. The benefit to haveing P.P. instead of your basic six shooter, is that it supposedly circumvents firearm restrictions when entering foreign countries, and I have to wonder if it may be a good idea to have one. Further surfing revealed that the Dept. of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms (my top 3 favs) did some testing on the P.P. with dire results. I’ll let you read all about it - my only comment is that their testing led to the “eventual destruction” of the Orion flare guns. If somebody has so many pirates to dispatch that the flare gun is eventually destroyed by the P.P., then they either need better guns or a new cruising area. I also have to wonder if Orion initiated the investigation to clear themselves of any liability – don’t blame ‘em if they did. From the pictures, I’m guessing the recoil from the regular ammo caused the flare guns to break – no barrels exploding or hands being blown off. Again, how often will you be shooting at pirates?
I truly feel that every person should have the ability to defend themselves, especially a slow moving sailboat in a world of high speed a-holes. If I’m sailing 20 miles offshore with my wife and some strange boat is bearing down on us, I sure-as-hell want something that fires lead bullets in my hand.
Final tidbit I surfed up – call your flare gun a “personal signaling device” if anyone ever asks or you are required to report it.
