Zooman and Stinkbait Call It Quits – OR NOT?

by RumHead on February 6, 2009

UPDATE: I have no idea what’s going on. Keep up to speed in the forums

LASTEST UPDATE: From a posting in the forum, it appears the trip is over for our two adventurers. It’s a shame they didn’t make it, but great effort guys and thanks for sharing it with all of us. Read about it here in the forum.

Original Post:
Things have taken a serious turn with our friends Steve and Ken (Zooman & Stinkbait) on their sailing trip to Key West. They have been reported overdue and the Coast Guard is beginning a search. This was message was just posted by the Coast Guard in the comments of the original post:

The US Coast Guard received an overdue report for the S/V PHADREA. Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg, Coast Guard Sector Key West, and CG District 7 Miami are all actively searching for the vessel. We are currently planning a fixed wing aircraft flight to attempt to locate the vessel.  Please contact Coast Guard District 7 Miami as soon as possible if the vessel is located or if you have any additional information of their whereabouts. Phone: 305-415-6800. Email: D07-SMB-CMDCENTER@uscg.mil

UPDATE: Just talked to Lisa, a friend of Ken’s that said the last contact with the guys was Tuesday at 7:00 a.m. Ken estimated they were approx. 40 miles from Marathon. Cell phone reception is very poor in the keys and they had reported having troubles with their VHF radio. There’s a very good chance that may be the reason they have not reported in.

The Coast Guard is proceeding with the air search because of the strong winds and cold weather conditions this past week. Their diligence is much appreciated – we are confident the guys will be found or report in soon.

UPDATE: The guys have been found in the keys and are o.k. – all recent info is here in the forum.

Our two guys Capt Stinkbait (ken)and zooman(steve) are alive and sailing. Just talked to coastguard reported to me that they were able to contact them through radio. Rough weather and no cell towers for contact. Coast guard contacted them 45 minutes ago and our two bravehearts seemed to be under no distress. The two are on thier way and should be at Flamingo marina within 3 or 4 hrs. Our exciting adventure continues. Thank God and Mother Ocean….cant wait to hear on thier adventures.

Last contact with Capt.Stinkbait.
I just heard from him via cell phone briefly as phone service is still not available as they are motoring towards civilization. Capt. Stinkbait and zooman tucked away themselves at shark river island until bad weather left and the coast was clear. The island had no civilazation but sounds like our guys are having a great adventure in spite of bad weather.
Thanks for all your prayers and cocerns on our two bravehearts Capt.Stinkbait and his crew zooman. Here Here and an arghhhhhh
for our intrepid adventurers. You guys are our favorite topic these days where the sea meets the sand. Thanks to our Capt. Rumhead for this website so we can all enjoy the trip to Key West, Florida via http://pyratsail.com.
The journey continues………
Sail on…Vixen Pirate Girl

I called the coast gaurd. Thats right I’m the guy who was worried about my lifelong friend Captain Stinkbait. I made stinkbait promise to file his daily float plan with me. After three days of no commnication it was time to pull the trigger. Hats off to the coast gaurd, they do a hell of a job. Everyone has told me I did the right thing. Exept for Zooman a.k.a. Steve Lardie. Stinkbait told me this morning that Zooman packed his bags and left on foot. Thats going to be a long walk through the everglades, I wonder if crocodiles prefer white meat. Aparently Zooman is upset about the coastgaurd knowing his whereabouts.

Per Stinkbait. He has asked me to post the following since he does not have access to WI FI at this moment…

I have nothing but the highest regards for Zooman however at the end of the day we did not see eye to eye. We did sail over 200 miles in a 25 ft vessel and we have seen things and places that many men will never see. In that aspect, it was definatley a positive experience. I wish the best of luck to Zooman in all his endeavors. I am very proud to have had sailed with him and wish him the best in the future.

Captian Stinkbait will be taking the offer of Rainman to sail home via 4×4 Dodge. Me and my boat will be picked up tomorrow afternoon. The end of a great adventure. If you do go to Flamigo watch out for the rattleback crockagators.

The Saga continues….GOOD NEWS-
Capt.Stinkbait and Capt. Zooman are in thier respective landlubber
homes safe and sound and aarrrrrgggghhhh still good friends.
BAD NEWS-PHEDRA DID NOT FARE SO WELL as the starboard axle snapped at 70 miles an hour on the Florida turnpike resulting in a catastrophic chain of events that resulted in the demise of my faithful and beloved phedra. She now rests in the capable hands of the A Superior Towing company impound in Broward county. As I cannot afford the cost to repair the trailer and towing fee combined,I shall be forced to forfiet my beloved boat and home. Fortunuately I grabbed all of Capt. Zooman’s personal effects before the salvaging, I however left all of my personal belogings behind including one half box of cheetos. I will sadly miss pheadra, however I shall start over again. Thank you for all of your interest in our story. Respectfully, Ken Temples (formally known as Capt. Stinkbait) SAIL ON SAILORS!

Rainmaker came by and told me about your wipeout. Next trip you should take Captain Coon Dog, I could have sailed you back with a glimmer of moonlight with one eye closed. The Coon has years of experience on the water with no maps back in the early days. We sailed by the Moon.

Love, Captian Coon
